Final sounds: students listen to, distinguish and practice of verbs ended in –ed
On performing this activity, students will try to correctly pronounce the final sounds / t /, / d / and / id /, distinguishing the voiced sounds and voiceless sounds

Make photocopies of the worksheets below for group of four or five students

Tell the students that they will be practicing pronunciation of the verbs ended in –ed
Ask students if they know how many ways of pronouncing verbs ended in –ed
Divide the board into 3 columns.
Write the sound / t / and the verb “stopped’ in column 1.
Write the sound / d / and the verb “arrived” in column 2.
Write the sound / id / and the verb “wanted” in column 3.
Add more verbs to column 1 (i.e. jumped, helped, walked knocked, watched, photographed, missed, washed). Ask students to listen and repeat, noticing the final sound / t /
Add more verbs to column 2 (i.e. explained, phoned, rained, arrived, involved). Ask students to listen and repeat, noticing the final sound /d /
Add more verbs to column 3 (i.e. arrested, started, mended, decided). Ask students to listen and repeat, noticing the final sound / id /
Ask students in what cases we pronounce / t /, / d / and / id /
We pronounce / t / after verbs ended in voiceless consonant sounds / p, k, , f, T, s, S /
We pronounce / d / after verbs ended in voiced consonant sounds and vowels.
We pronounce /id / after verbs ended in / t / and / d /
